Debra Granik met Vietnam veteran (and burly biker with a heart of gold) Ronnie ‘Stray Dog’ Hall during the filming of her previous feature Winter’s Bone, where Hall played the minor character Thump Milton. Granik’s first documentary follows Hall though his modest life in an understated and touching snapshot of Americana, avoiding stereotypes, clichés and sentimentality whilst carving a joyful study of an All-American subject who the film refuses to marginalise. Exploring elements of faith, loss and love, Granik delivers a heart-warming portrait of a man amidst his Harleys.
