Oscar-winning director Kevin Macdonald unveiled this portrait of reggae legend Bob Marley to rapturous reviews at this year’s Berlin Film Festival. A fascinating overview of Marley’s life and times, it follows him from the hillside Jamaican shack where he grew up, to international stardom, and eventually to the snowy Bavarian clinic where he spent his last weeks under treatment for the cancer that would kill him, aged just thirty-six, in 1981. Made with the support of the Marley family, this film features rare footage, incredible performances and revelatory interviews with the people who knew him, bringing Marley, his times, and the Trench Town slums, vividly to life. Whether you’re a fan or have not got much further than Marley’s Greatest Hits, this is a doc that, like last year’s Senna, will draw you in all the same.
