As war clouds gathered, French poetic realism grew increasingly pessimistic, and this film is pure melancholy magic: sets shrouded in mists and shadows, a script courtesy of poet Jacques Prévert, and a cast including beautiful waif Michèle Morgan, the inimitable Michel Simon (Boudu Saved From Drowning, L’Atalante), and Pierre Brasseur as gangster Lucien.
