Fall in love (again) with Jean Gabin in this, perhaps his most iconic role as an army deserter who arrives in the fog-bound city of Le Havre in search of a new life, only to discover an underworld filled with lost souls, themselves in need of salvation... As war clouds gathered, French poetic realism grew increasingly pessimistic, and this film is pure melancholy magic: sets shrouded in mists and shadows, a script courtesy of poet Jacques Prévert, and a cast including beautiful waif Michèle Morgan, the inimitable Michel Simon (Boudu Saved From Drowning, L’Atalante), and Pierre Brasseur as gangster Lucien.
