Schwarzenegger plays a robot returning from a post-apocalyptic future, programmed to kill the mother of the yet unborn John Connor, who will lead the revolt against machines in WW3. A metaphor for the impending threat of nuclear war and the nature versus technology debate, substitute Cameron’s machines for nuclear arsenal and the message is clear – it’s only a matter of time before the human race becomes a victim of its own creation, unless there’s a determined effort to destroy it. Arnie was in his prime in the 80s, and his relentless, unremorseful cyborg makes for one of the most memorable villains in screen history.
