An auspicious feature debut from award-winning theatre director Rufus Norris, Broken is a lyrical, sensitively handled adaptation of the powerful Daniel Clay novel. Newcomer Eloise Laurence is terrific as Skunk, an eleven-year-old girl whose innocent view of the world is tainted by the dark impulses of the adults around her. When a young man is savagely attacked by a neighbour it has tragic consequences for everyone in a suburban street. In a film of expertly controlled mood and striking performances, Tim Roth is outstanding as Skunk’s beloved father Archie, and Damon Albarn’s Electric Wave Bureau contribute a beautiful, bittersweet score.

The screening on Wednesday 20 March (18.40) will be introduced by David Archibald as part of GFT’s Contemporary Cinema Course.

Specially commissioned programme notes are available for this screening.
