Seasons and Festivals
We’re celebrating filmmaking greats once again with the return of our popular CineMasters programme this April. This month, we turn our focus to contemporary Australian auteur Baz Luhrmann, bringing together his ‘Red Curtain Trilogy’ — Strictly Ballroom (1992), Romeo + Juliet (1996) and Moulin Rouge! (2001). It’s a rare opportunity to experience all three films on the big screen, alongside his first documentary, EPiC: Elvis Presley in Concert, which premiered at the Toronto Film Festival in 2025. Our screening of Moulin Rouge! on Monday 9 April will be introduced by composer Craig Armstrong, who won a BAFTA and a Golden Globe for his work on the film.
April is also the month of the music documentary here at GFT, with the return of our regular Sound and Vision programme, presenting two new films that showcase extraordinary musical talent on the big screen. Using never-before-seen footage, exclusive voice messages and accounts from those closest to him, It’s Never Over, Jeff Buckley offers a portrait of the captivating singer whose rise to fame was cut short by his sudden death in 1997. Collaborative documentary Broken English presents an unorthodox portrait of rock icon Marianne Faithfull, who died midway through the project, and features appearances from friends and collaborators including Nick Cave and Courtney Love.
Our long-running Coen Brothers of the Month season also returns in April, with a special screening of the duo’s remake of the 1955 Ealing classic The Ladykillers. Meanwhile, our Queer Cinema Sundays programme will showcase the German queer classic Mädchen in Uniform.
Special screenings
We’re delighted to welcome a range of special guests for Q&As throughout April. These include Underland director Rob Petit (Sunday 12 April); Palestine Comedy Club producer Charlotte Knowles (Sunday 19 April); Our Land director Orban Wallace alongside Right to Roam campaigner Nadia Shaikh (Friday 24 April); and The North director Bart Schrijver (Sunday 26 April). On Thursday 30 April, a special screening of Alex Garland’s Ex Machina will be followed by a Q&A with University of Glasgow PhD candidate Michael Quinn, who will explore the film as a route into philosophical questions around attention and technology.
We’ll also screen the National Theatre Live production of Arthur Miller’s All My Sons on Thursday 16 April, directed by Ivo Van Hove and starring Bryan Cranston and Marianne Jean-Baptiste.
Borscht Film Club, a community-driven initiative showcasing Polish cinema, will present a special screening of the powerful coming-of-age drama Brat (Brother), on Wednesday 29 April.
As part of Glasgow Film Festival’s Animatic Talent Lab, our Animated Wednesdays series returns with a new showcase of outstanding animated short films from filmmakers based in Scotland and Los Angeles, celebrating the growth of Scotland’s animation sector.
New releases and re-releases
We’re also bringing back some of the most popular films from Glasgow Film Festival 2026 for their general release this April, including California Schemin’, Father Mother Sister Brother, The Good Boy, The Wizard of the Kremlin, Rose of Nevada, Rebuilding, Primavera, and Leonora in the Morning Light.
Other new releases and re-releases arriving this month include The Drama, Mother Mary, Splitsville, Amelie, The Stranger, Two Prosecutors, Miroirs No.3, Akira, and The Blue Trail.
