Glasgow Film Theatre Announces Programme for August 2026
Glasgow Film Theatre (GFT) – the city’s home of cinema for over 85 years – has revealed its programme for August. Highlights include seasons celebrating the work of visionary filmmaker Spike Jonze, comic book adaptations on screen, summer horror favourites, South Asian Heritage Season, and a special Havana Glasgow Film Festival event.

Seasons and Festivals
GFT’s popular CineMasters programme continues in August with a season devoted to Spike Jonze. From his roots as a skate photographer and music video director, Jonze has built a distinctive body of work that combines visual inventiveness, narrative experimentation and deeply human storytelling. The season revisits his acclaimed collaborations with Academy Award-winning screenwriter Charlie Kaufman, with screenings of the metafictional comedy dramas Being John Malkovich and Adaptation, alongside the Oscar-winning science-fiction romance Her, followed by a special panel discussion with film journalists Alistair Harkness and Rafa Sales Ross.
As part of the UK-wide Cinema Rediscovered film festival, GFT presents Comics Come Alive, a celebration of inventive and unconventional comic book adaptations. The season opens with Mario Bava’s stylish cult classic Danger: Diabolik in a new 4K restoration, featuring a pre-recorded introduction from director Edgar Wright. Further screenings include Edgar Wright’s own Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, also with a pre-recorded introduction; a 25th anniversary presentation of Josie and the Pussycats; and a 4K restoration of spy adventure Modesty Blaise, introduced by season co-curator George Cruse-Drew.
August also brings a selection of genre favourites in GFT’s Summer Horror Days season. Audiences can revisit Steven Spielberg’s Jaws in 4K, alongside slasher classics Friday the 13th (1980) and I Know What You Did Last Summer (1997), as well as modern horror favourites Midsommar and It Follows.
To mark South Asian Heritage Season, GFT presents a trio of screenings from Sunday 2 until Thursday 20 August that celebrate South Asian stories of collective memory, power and resistance. The season includes Khamosh Pani (Silent Waters)with an introduction and Abu accompanied by the short film Kinaara. The season concludes with Republic of Amnesia followedby a Q&A discussion with director Kannan Arunasalam.
The cinema will also welcome Havana Glasgow Film Festival on Thursday 27 August for a special screening of Fidel Castro ¡Venceremos!, followed by a Q&A with author and Professor of Latin American Political Economy at the University of Glasgow, Helen Yaffe; and Ismara Mercedes Vargas Walter, Cuban ambassador to the UK.
Looking ahead, GFT’s CineMasters season for September celebrates one of cinema’s most influential auteurs, Andrei Tarkovsky. The retrospective will include screenings of all seven of Tarkovsky’s feature films: Ivan’s Childhood, Andrei Rublev, Solaris, Mirror, Stalker, and 4K restorations of Nostalghia and The Sacrifice.
Special screenings and events
August features a wide range of special screenings, introductions and guest events.
Must-see features for music fans include a 30th anniversary screening of Glastonbury The Movie on Saturday 8 August with a Q&A from director Robin Mahoney, as well as a screening of White Riot on Thursday 13 August featuring a Q&A with director Rubikah Shah.
On Thursday 6 August, audiences can catch a preview screening of Bouchra with a panel discussion curated by Exhale.Group, and on Sunday 16 August GFT hosts a sold-out preview screening of Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma. The same day also features a special double bill of director Jane Schoenbrun’s previous films, We’re All Going to the World’s Fair and I Saw the TV Glow.
The cinema’s monthly Queer Cinema Sundays strand presents Sleepaway Camp on Sunday 30 August, complete with a special recorded introduction from Indigo Korres, film curator and director of SQIFF (Scottish Queer International Film Festival).
On Monday 31 August, documentary Life Support, which investigates the immense challenges faced by Gaza’s healthcare system, screens with a post-film Q&A with director Daniele Rugo. Then, on Wednesday 2 September, audiences can enjoy a 30th anniversary screening of Beautiful Thing introduced by Reclaim the Frame.
New Releases and Restorations
Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey continues its run at GFT throughout August with GFT remaining the only cinema in Glasgow where audiences can experience it on 70mm film (selected screenings).
New releases and re-releases screening during the month include Blue Heron, Synthetic Sincerity, Ish, Love Me Tender, Bouchra, The Summer Book, Obsession, Tony, Sunny Dancer, Lady, The End of Oak Street, Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma, Stop! That! Train!, Colony, I Want Your Sex, Bitter Christmas and Life Support.
Smash horror hit Backrooms makes its GFT debut alongside Alain Resnais' classic Last Year at Marienbad, pairing two unforgettable journeys through liminal, labyrinthine worlds where time and reality slip unsettlingly out of reach.
The programme also includes a range of classic and anniversary screenings. Alfred Hitchcock’s Notorious celebrates its 80th anniversary, while Strangers on a Train returns for its 75th anniversary. Audiences can also enjoy anniversary screenings of Hunt for the Wilderpeople which celebrates its 10th anniversary, Trainspotting in 4K for its 30th anniversary, and the beloved Studio Ghibli classic Kiki’s Delivery Service in 4K. And, ahead of the release of its long-awaited sequel later this year, GFT invites audiences to revisit the witchy 1990s cult favourite Practical Magic on the big screen.
Accessible and family screenings
GFT continues its commitment to Cinema For All through its regular accessible and family-friendly programme.
The cinema’s weekly Take 2 strand continues on Saturday mornings with screenings of family favourites including Spy Kids 2, Megamind and Zathura: A Space Adventure. It also features a Take 2: Access screening of Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron ina relaxed and welcoming environment for neurodivergent children and families. All are welcome.
Movie Memories, GFT’s dementia-friendly film event, presents a screening of Preston Sturges’ classic romantic comedy The Lady Eve on 20 August. Designed to enable people living with dementia to socialise in a safe and welcoming environment, Movie Memories screenings offer a relaxed atmosphere for audiences and carers.
Access Film Club, delivered in partnership with the National Autistic Society Scotland, includes a film screening and a post-film chat in a friendly and welcoming environment. For the August event, GFT will present a special screening of hilarious action-packed adventure Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves.
GFT’s regular deaf and hard-of-hearing friendly Visible Cinema screening also returns for August with iconic comedy The Birdcage which will be screening alongside two shorts from Little Pictures by GMAC with an introduction by one of the filmmakers, Benedetta Zanetti. This screening features full access for Deaf, deafened and hard of hearing audiences including descriptive subtitles, BSL interpretation and live captioning where appropriate.
