Glasgow Film Club Testimonial

Rich Text

“A lot of people in Glasgow would talk about the weather, and I don't need to talk about the weather cause I can talk about the GFT.”
Billy*, Glasgow Film Club regular attendee

Billy*, a guest from Glasgow City Mission, hadn’t been to the cinema regularly since childhood. He discovered Glasgow Film Club through our outreach work, and since then, has become a dedicated regular. Through film, Billy has found renewed purpose, joy, and a sense of connection. After experiencing a breakdown in his early 30s and facing addiction and social isolation, Billy was looking for positive ways to reengage with life. The monthly film club offered more than just movies, it  became a therapeutic space where he could connect with others, explore new interests, and feel part of a community.

Billy has attended festivals, pop up screenings, and even helped choose films like Dunkirk for special events. He’s brought friends along, joined in discussions, and values having his voice heard. Film has helped him build confidence, reduce anxiety, and develop a sense of belonging.

Now four years sober, Billy credits Glasgow Film Club as a key part of his ongoing recovery and wellbeing.

“I used to avoid groups,” he says. “Now I’m part of something. I feel valued.”

This story reflects the quiet yet powerful impact of community-led film engagement.

*For the purposes of this case study, Billy's name has been changed.
