Aftersun

As well as being the home of world cinema in Glasgow, GFT is also a champion and springboard for homegrown talent. Our box office hits in recent years include an impressive number of Scottish films, amongst them Charlotte Wells’s Oscar-nominated Aftersun, which was an international success and points to an exciting way forward for Scottish cinema. Film fans who missed or are eager to revisit it following its roaringly successful release in 2022 will delight in a one-off chance to see it back on the big screen as part of the anniversary programme. At a fading vacation resort in the late 1990s, 11-year-old Sophie (Frankie Corio) treasures rare time together with her loving and idealistic father, Calum (Paul Mescal). As a world of adolescence creeps into view, beyond her eye Calum struggles under the weight of life outside of fatherhood. 20 years later, Sophie's tender recollections of their last holiday become a powerful and heartrending portrait of their relationship, as she tries to reconcile the father she knew with the man she didn't, in Charlotte Wells’ superb and searingly emotional debut film. --------------- Year of Celebration: 2024 marks 85 years since our cinema (originally the Cosmo) was built, 50 years since GFT was founded and the 20th edition of Glasgow Film Festival. We are celebrating with a programme of special screenings taking place throughout May, showcasing films that have been hugely popular with audiences and have played a unique role in the history of GFT over the past five decades. Browse the Anniversary Programme at https://www.glasgowfilm.org/anniversary-programme Whilst our box office and bar sales only cover around 50% of our annual costs and help keep the film reels rolling, we rely on donations and fundraising to run our education and community activities. We need your help! Celebrate 50 years of GFT by donating £50 at checkout. A £50 donation secures your seat at our special January screening, find out more or donate via glasgowfilm.org/donate. Shape the next 50 years of independent film. Your contribution matters.DramaPT1H41M12A2024-05-13
