Born in Flames
Lizzie Borden’s 1980's post-punk feminist cult classic was shot guerilla-style over five years in collaboration with her non-professional cast, which gives the scripting a sharp tang of authenticity. Set in a near-future world, 10 years after a peaceful socialist revolution, the patriarchy and the problems it brings continue to bite. Against this backdrop, an underground network of women are planning a fresh rebellion, determined to fight for their rights. An energetic call to action that has retained its resonance, Borden’s film also offers a fascinating snapshot of Regan-era New York.
Glasgow Film Festival presents Beyond Eden and Born in Flames: a screening exploring alternative societal structures and the potential of collective female organising. Born in Flames will include a recorded introduction from Lizzie Borden, examining the film’s alarming relevance decades after its original release. This programme marks the culmination of GFF’s debut series of feminist film club discussion groups, held at Glasgow Women’s Library. If you’d like to explore the themes of these films before the screening, you can book a place at the final film club session here.DramaPT1H30M152026-03-07Honey
