Borscht Film Club: Brat (Brother) + recorded Q&A

A raw, tender and deeply human drama, Brother follows a family struggling to break free from the weight of violence, loyalty and inherited fear. At its centre is Agnieszka (Agnieszka Grochowska), a mother fighting to shield her two sons from the destructive legacy of their imprisoned father. 14-year-old Dawid carries far more than any boy his age should, trying to protect his younger brother while navigating school, home and the unforgiving streets. When Konrad — a judo coach and the first trustworthy adult in Dawid’s life — enters their world, long buried tensions erupt, threatening to tear the family apart… or finally offer them a fragile chance at hope. Drawing on personal experience, director Maciej Sobieszczański crafts a story that is both intimate and universal: a portrait of children forced to grow up too quickly, of a woman fighting for dignity, and of the difficult, often painful possibility of change. The film features powerful performances from Grochowska, Julian Świeżewski, Tomasz Schuchardt and Jacek Braciak, alongside remarkable screen debuts from Filip Wiłkomirski and Tytus Szymczuk — young judokas whose authenticity shapes the film’s emotional core. After closing the 24th Polish Film Festival Kinoteka in London, the film is presented at GFT as part of Borscht Film Club’s collaboration with Kinoteka.
