Set around Christmas in New York, Stanley Kubrick’s final masterpiece is a dark and perverse tale, and arguably the ultimate alternative festive film. Bill and Alice (played by then Hollywood power couple Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman) have a seemingly idyllic life: successful careers, a much sought-after Manhattan apartment, and a burgeoning family. But when Alice confesses to feelings of infidelity over a stranger she met on vacation, Bill's perfect world is up-ended and he too turns to thoughts of straying from their marriage. After a chance encounter with an old friend and his elite New York acquaintances creates an opportunity to attend an unlikely and highly secretive social event, Bill sets off on an increasingly bizarre Christmas odyssey, determined to commit an unfaithful act that will, in his mind, balance the relationship with his wife. Stanley Kubrick's last film is a surreal and disturbing thriller that charts sexual relations, unrequited desires and the dark power dynamics of social elites.
