Goodbye to Language (Adieu au Language)

The 43rd feature by Jean-Luc Godard, Goodbye to Language alights on doubt and despair with the greatest freedom and joy. At 83, Jean-Luc Godard was working as a truly independent filmmaker, guided by no concerns beyond the immediate act of creation. Goodbye to Language becomes an expression of his relationship to time, light, colour, and cinema itself, as well as to the challenges of living and communicating with others. Godard’s beloved dog, Roxy, emerges as the film’s unlikely star, anchoring a work as elusive and unclassifiable as a poem or a piece of music. While it may be tempting to read it as a farewell, Godard was already looking ahead, continuing to push cinema into new territory.
