<p class="font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal" dir="ltr">Jake VanDorn is a Calvinist businessman in Grand Rapids, Michigan, a widower raising a teenage daughter inside the certainties of his church. When Kristen disappears on a youth group trip to California, a private investigator eventually shows him a reel of film — and Jake goes west himself, into the pornography industry of Los Angeles and San Francisco, posing as a producer to find her.</p><p class="font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal" dir="ltr"> </p><p class="font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal" dir="ltr"><strong>Paul Schrader</strong> grew up in the same strict Dutch Calvinist world as his protagonist and didn't see a film until he was seventeen, and <em>Hardcore</em> is his most direct reckoning with that upbringing: a <em>Searchers</em>-shaped journey in which the rescuer's certainties are the real subject. <strong>George C.
