In Bruges

Hidden amongst the violence and profanity of Martin McDonagh’s searingly offensive (and very funny) debut film, is a Christmas-set parable dealing with guilt, grace and the possibility of forgiveness. Martin McDonagh's bittersweet comedy-drama follows two Irish hitmen, Ray (Colin Farrell) and Ken (Brendan Gleeson), who are sent to lay low in Bruges, Belgium over Christmas by their employer, Harry (Ralph Fiennes), after they disastrously botch their previous assignment. Reduced to tourism while waiting for their next mission, the pair have time to reflect on the mistakes of the last hit, the larger implications of their line of employment and bicker over the city of Bruges in general. Their prolonged stay in the 'fairytale' city becomes more and more surreal as the excesses of drugs and alcohol take effect and the consequences of the failed assignment become clearer, leading to a dramatic escalation.
