Kundun

Our Scorsese of the Month screening for May, Kundun is selected and introduced by Professor Ian Christie, editor of the seminal book Scorsese on Scorsese. One of Martin Scorsese's lesser-known films, Kundun brings to the big screen brings to the screen the true story of the Dalai Lama. In 1937, a two-and-a-half year old boy from a simple family in Tibet was recognized as the 14th reincarnation of the Buddha of Compassion, and destined to become the spiritual and political leader of his people. Told through the eyes of His Holiness, Kundun brings to life the account of the Dalai Lama's early life, from childhood through the Chinese invasion of Tibet and his journey into exile. You can hear more from Professor Ian Christie at our Scorsese on Scorsese: In Conversation event on Monday 27 May at 6.15pm. In English, Tibetan and Mandarin with English subtitles. --------------- Year of Celebration: 2024 marks 85 years since our cinema (originally the Cosmo) was built, 50 years since GFT was founded and the 20th edition of Glasgow Film Festival. We are celebrating with a programme of special screenings taking place throughout May, showcasing films that have been hugely popular with audiences and have played a unique role in the history of GFT over the past five decades. Browse the Anniversary Programme at https://www.glasgowfilm.org/anniversary-programme Whilst our box office and bar sales only cover around 50% of our annual costs and help keep the film reels rolling, we rely on donations and fundraising to run our education and community activities. We need your help! Celebrate 50 years of GFT by donating £50 at checkout. A £50 donation secures your seat at our special January screening, find out more or donate via glasgowfilm.org/donate. Shape the next 50 years of independent film. Your contribution matters.DramaPT2H14M122024-05-27
