Made in England: The Films of Powell and Pressburger

Martin Scorsese first encountered the films of Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger when he was a child, sitting in front of the family TV. When their famous logo came up on screen, Scorsese says, 'You knew you were in for fantasy, wonder, magic – real film magic.' Now, in this documentary, he tells the story of his lifelong love-affair with their movies, including The Red Shoes, The Life and Death Of Colonel Blimp, Black Narcissus, and The Tales of Hoffmann. 'Certain films you simply run all the time and you live with them,' Scorsese says. 'As you grow older they grow deeper. I’m not sure how it happens, but it does. For me, that body of work is a wondrous presence, a constant source of energy, and a reminder of what life and art are all about.' Drawing on a rich array of archive material, Scorsese explores in full the collaboration between the Englishman Powell and the Hungarian Pressburger – two romantics and idealists, who thrived in the face of adversity during the Second World War but were eventually brought low by the film industry of the 1950s. Scorsese celebrates their ability to create 'subversive commercial movies' and describes how deeply their films have influenced his own work. 'The opportunity to have Scorsese, who has actively championed the duo’s films for at least half a century, walk the viewer through their work, his history with it and, more surprisingly, describe exactly how he has used some of it in his own pictures, is not to be missed.' - Screen ★★★★★ - The Guardian WHY WE LOVE IT: 'Martin Scorsese takes us on a guided tour through the cinema of Powell & Pressburger, supported by a tremendous bank of archival material and clips from The Archers' filmography. Scorsese's personal recollections and the esteem in which he holds P&P result in a wonderfully moving film; affectionate as it is informative. Director David Hinton deftly weaves the story of P&P with more personal anecdotes, including how Michael Powell and Scorsese met and formed their friendship, with Powell acting as something of a mentor and creative inspiration. Scorsese expresses his affection for P&P enthusiastically while elucidating on their influence over his own filmography - it's impossible not to be swept along by it.' - David Anderson, Glasgow Film Festival Marketing CoordinatorDocumentaryPT2H13M12A2024-05-10
