For the April edition of Queer Cinema Sundays, join us for a landmark in lesbian cinema, the 1931 German classic Madchen in Uniform. Based on the play by Christa Winsloe, who adapted her script for the screenplay, and directed by pioneer Leontine Sagan, this acclaimed lesbian love story which was banned by the Nazis and censored for American cinemagoers, is truly thrilling for contemporary viewers.
A key film of the Weimar era, Madchen in Uniform follows a student Manuela who arrives at an all-girls boarding school where she starts to fall in love with her empathetic tutor, Fräulein von Bernburg who reciprocates her feelings. As Manuela seeks to follow her heart, she encounters the challenges of pursuing a forbidden romance and a scandal soon erupts.
This screening will include a recorded introduction by Camilla Baier, co-founder of Invisible Women.
