Selma

The history-making 1965 march from Selma to Montgomery, Alabama, lies at the heart of Ava DuVernay’s drama, which saw her become the first African-American female director to be nominated for the Best Picture Oscar. Her biopic zeroes in on a handful of months in Dr Martin Luther King Jr’s fight for Black Americans’ voting rights. David Oyelowo, who had dreamed of playing the civil rights leader for years, puts in a powerhouse performance as DuVernay strikes a balance between King's personal and political life. Cinematographer Bradford Young gives the crowd scenes an epic sweep, while lending domestic interactions and intimacy.HistoryPT2H8M122026-03-06
