The Lives of Others

GFT is one of the few Scottish cinemas still equipped to project 35mm and 70mm film. As the perfect showcase for this expertise, audiences can enjoy Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck’s Oscar-winning thriller The Lives of Others on 35mm to mark Europe Day on Thursday 9 May. The film's powerful themes reflect our core belief that film is a vehicle for creating empathy. In 1983 East Berlin, dedicated Stasi officer Gerd Wiesler (Ulrich Mühe), doubting that a famous playwright (Sebastian Koch) is loyal to the Communist Party, receives approval to spy on the man and his actress-lover Christa-Maria (Martina Gedeck). Wiesler becomes unexpectedly sympathetic to the couple, then faces conflicting loyalties when his superior takes a liking to Christa-Maria and orders Wiesler to get the playwright out of the way. The screening will be preceded by the short film ‘In Motion’ (Ross Woodhead 2024, 5mins). Shot in GFT’s projection booths, the film is a poetic celebration of the art and magic of projecting images onto a cinema screen. In German with English subtitles. --------------- Year of Celebration: 2024 marks 85 years since our cinema (originally the Cosmo) was built, 50 years since GFT was founded and the 20th edition of Glasgow Film Festival. We are celebrating with a programme of special screenings taking place throughout May, showcasing films that have been hugely popular with audiences and have played a unique role in the history of GFT over the past five decades. Browse the Anniversary Programme at https://www.glasgowfilm.org/anniversary-programme Whilst our box office and bar sales only cover around 50% of our annual costs and help keep the film reels rolling, we rely on donations and fundraising to run our education and community activities. We need your help! Celebrate 50 years of GFT by donating £50 at checkout. A £50 donation secures your seat at our special January screening, find out more or donate via glasgowfilm.org/donate. Shape the next 50 years of independent film. Your contribution matters.DramaPT2H17M152024-05-09
