South Asian Heritage Month

I’m Neha Apsara, the programmer for this year’s South Asian Heritage Month season at GFT. Running from Sunday 1 - Sunday 17 August, this programme celebrates the diverse cultures and stories across the South Asian subcontinent and its diaspora.

South Asian Heritage Month was officially launched in the UK in 2019 to honour rich histories and experiences, with dates marking key moments in 1947’s independence and partition.

This season features three films from distinct cultural contexts: Dheepan (France) follows Sri Lankan Tamil refugees seeking safety and a new life; Mahanagar (India) portrays the challenges faced by a middle-class Bengali family navigating societal change; and I for India (UK/India) uses intimate family archives to explore South Asian migration and identity in Britain. Whether reconnecting with your heritage or discovering new perspectives, these powerful stories resonate across generations and borders.
