South Asian Heritage Season at GFT, will run from Sunday 2 - Thursday 20 August. Curated by Neha Apsara, this year's films explore a selection of films about collective memory and amnesia, power and resistance.
South Asian Heritage Month was officially launched in the UK in 2019 to honour rich histories and experiences, with dates marking key moments in 1947’s independence and partition.
This season features three films: Khamosh Pani (Silent Waters) about a widowed mother and her young son living in a Punjabi village as it undergoes radical changes during the late 1970s; Abu deeply personal story of migration from Pakistan to Canada, self-discovery and familial reconciliation; and Republic of Amnesia + Q&A with director which follows young activists whose political awakening unfolds in real time as they organise demonstrations, face arrest, and confront a political system built to endure.
