About Movie Memories

Movie Memories is a monthly programme presenting classic and contemporary film screenings alongside a programme of multi-arts entertainment. This programme is designed especially for people living with dementia. This encompasses people living with a type of dementia as well as their carers, friends and family.

With dementia-aware staff and volunteers (Movie Memories Ambassadors), a safe and social environment is created where everyone is welcome. People living with dementia play a central role in the programme delivery — Agnes Houston MBE is our Dementia Coordinator.

Why is this programme important?

A new case of dementia is diagnosed somewhere in the world every four seconds. This is something we can’t ignore, particularly as 34% of the 850,000 people currently living with dementia in the UK don’t feel part of their community, 61% have felt anxious or depressed recently and 40% have felt lonely (Data from Alzheimer’s Society).

Closer to home, 90,000 people have a diagnosis of dementia in Scotland and 10% of those people live in Glasgow. Research has shown that many people with dementia grow to fear that they will no longer be socially welcome, and stop taking part in activities they enjoy.

At GFT we recognise the changes in our audiences, and understand that we need to be doing more to make sure people living with dementia — together with their family and friends — can enjoy a cinema experience in a safe and inclusive environment.
Film not only has the power to bring communities together but it is a powerful tool to improve mental wellbeing and confidence.

How do I find out about upcoming events through the website?

Each month Movie Memories will present either classic or contemporary film screenings or archive screening events alongside multi-arts entertainment.

This webpage will be updated regularly with details of upcoming events. You can find the event listings at the top of this page.

You can also find upcoming Movie Memories events via our Accessible Screenings page, which you can access here or using the 'Access' dropdown menu in the top bar of the website. On the Accessible Screenings page, click the 'Dementia Friendly' filter to see only Movie Memories events.

How do I get to GFT?

If you are arriving by car or taxi there is a convenient drop-off point located directly in front of GFT. The drop-off point does not have a drop curb.

GFT does not have its own car park. The nearest public car park is Cambridge Street Car Park (G2 3HN), which is open 24 hours and located off Cowcaddens Road with nine accessible marked Blue Badge bays.
