A Recent History of Anime

A mini season curated by the GFT Youth Board.

Out of thousands of films, we believe these four examples emphasise the wide stylistic variety that has evolved within anime in the last 30 years. The end of the century brought Hideaki Anno’s The End of Evangelion, whose 1997 release shocked even longtime fans of the show with its emotionally evocative blend of existentialism, arresting visuals and rejection of what came before. The 21st Century brought a new wave of styles, ranging from the surrealist and vibrant Mind Game in 2004, to the gorgeous crowdpleaser Your Name in 2016, and the more experimental and psychedelic visuals of Night is Short, Walk on Girl in 2017. These recent examples from the digital era of anime demonstrate the multitude of styles made possible by modern animation tools.

We hope you enjoy these beautiful works of art, offering more insight into the recent history of the medium and allowing you to appreciate the artistry of these select productions.

The Glasgow Film Theatre Youth Board are a voluntary group, aged between 16-25, who meet monthly to advise on programming our monthly free screenings for 15-25 Card members and all things GFT. The Youth Board were delighted to work with Paul, GFT's Programme Manager on this special mini-season.
